AIAAA President’s Message 2005-06

A privilege and a responsibility.  These two words sum up the day-to-day life of a high school athletic director.  Responsibility probably seems more obvious to most of us.  Each day brings a variety of task that are important and often urgent.  But it is also a privilege to work with the coaches, parents, and especially the student-athletes in our schools.  These kids will someday be shaping our future and it is a unique privilege to have a hand in shaping them.

The 2005 AIAAA Conference in Prescott was another tremendous experience for all participants!  John Naber inspired us with his message and anecdotes about the Olympic ideal.  Dr. Slemmer’s class on “Character in Coaching” reminded us what it really means to coach and teach kids.  The Hall of Fame honorees reflected what a life of service to kids and community is all about.

As we look forward to 2005-06, the AIAAA continues to make education and character key components of our organization.  In cooperation with the NIAAA, Leadership Training Courses are offered all year long.  The board of directors has set a goal that all board members be certified by the end of 2006.  We are continuing to add more sponsors so that our conference is bigger and better with more great opportunities to learn for the members.  We also want our partnership with the AIA to grow and develop since we are both focused on making activities a positive part of the high school experience.

Thank you to each and every one of you, the athletic directors who work so hard to make high school athletics a great opportunity for kids to learn and grow.

Doug Meyer
2005-06 AIAAA President
